With driverless technology already on the roads, the clock is ticking for cities to catch up to the unique demands of autonomous vehicles. These smart cities, which use data to understand new patterns and behaviors, are paving the way. Indeed, it will be interesting to see how rest of the world reacts.

While smart cities initially represented a top-down, multinational, tech-driven paradigm, in recent years, we have begun to witness cities embracing more bottom-up citizen co-creation. Despite this transition, much of the tech in smart cities is still being implemented top-down with proprietary software driving IoT, big data and the like.
